Classroom presentations continued this month at Stuart-Hobson Middle School. About 30 7th grader students and 30 8th grade students received HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy prevention and relationship skills education. STAR Guide Brittany McKinley plus UTC staff provided the presentations. This adds to the 150 youth who participated in ULTRA Teen Choice education sessions last month at Stuart-Hobson and Kramer Middle Schools.

Executive Director Richard Urban was the guest speaker on both October 12 and November 9 at the Capitol Hill Kiwanis Club. Richard's presentation was well received, and Kiwanis members offered to be community sponsors for ULTRA Teen Choice Service Clubs. Community sponsors provide moral support by attending Club meetings, and they help get the work out in the community about the good work that the youth are doing. Please reply to this email or contact our office if you would like to serve as a community sponsor.

ULTRA Teen Choice Service Clubs are lead by STAR (Students Teaching Abstinence & Responsibility) Guides from Howard University, Catholic University, and Comprehensive Health Academy. Eighth grade clubs kicked off on October 30 at Kramer Middle School, and on November 2 at Stuart-Hobson Middle School, with about 15 youth attending each club. Students got to know each other better, and trained to be peer counselors.

The ULTRA Teen Choice abstinence education and relationship education program at New Community for Children After School Program is funded by a grant through the DC Metropolitan Healthy Marriage and Relationships Coalition; and supports the “Together Is Better” Campaign to strengthen DC families, marriages and communities.  For more information on the DC Coalition and Together Is Better. This grant has also funded, in part, training for STAR Guides working at Stuart-Hobson and Kramer Middle schools.

Peer Counselors at Stuart-Hobson lead sessions to teach their peers about how to handle peer pressure on October 23 (two sessions) and on November 13, reaching about 80 of their peers in 7th and 8th grades. Thirteen different peer counselors were involved.
View the Reality Check Video: The video is superb!  I am really touched and inspired by the work you are committed to. I wish such a program existed when I was at Kramer. The mission and purpose is nothing but positive. The best things in our world sometimes seem to get the least support.  But I know that this program will expand and reach those who make it happen as well as those whom you service. If you are concerned about helping youth to remain abstinent until marriage, then please come and give your input and advice. Please reply to this email or contact the UTC office at 202-544-5081 to let us know that you will be attending.
