Testimony by Urban Life Training alumnus Sharnetta Tyler

Sharnetta Tyler

Urban Life Training has made a difference in the lives of over 3000 youth in the Washington, DC metro area over the past nine years.  One of those young people is Sharnetta Tyler.  Ms. Tyler has recently worked for DCPS.  But just eight years ago, Ms. Tyler was a junior at Eastern Senior High School and a member of the Urban Life training program.  Here is what she says about what Urban Life Training did for her:
A large part of life is character.  Who you are as a person.  And giving attention to that, allowing time to grow in those areas is really important…  Because once you‘re out of high school, once you get your degree, once you get the job that you want, life is always still asking, who are you?, what do you stand for? Will you do that? How far will you go? Do you like that?  What do you stand for?  So life is always going to present you opportunities to show who you are and what you stand for.
This program really allowed me to grow in those areas so by the time I got to college I was ok to say no, that’s not me.  … So I remember being that confident when I was your age saying this is going to be life for me, so transitioning over into college Like I held  on to that same virtue.  Like there was never something [else]that caught my attention,  nothing else said well maybe I want to be a mom before I’m a wife, nothing, that was the same goal I have now;  I am still holding on to that.  …I understood in this area, in this same space, [being in] this program a few years ago when I was your age, like understanding that then helped me set myself up for it later.

Twenty youth and adults were on hand for a Celebration of Purity held as the final session of the Spring STAR Leadership Training at Lovin' Life on April 22, 2012 at the Emergence Community Arts Collective. (Register here) for the current session). Parents, young adults and school age participants enjoyed a Lovin' Life Ministries video message that helped them understand how to become true parents and create a family that can honor God as its center. Following the message, group discussion helped increase understanding as well as awareness of others viewpoints.
Attendees enjoyed a dinner that included dishes created by some of the participants. The highlight of the evening was the sharing of a "True Love Waits" ring from parents to their child(ren). STAR Guide Neema Rowe led the participants to recite the Urban Life Training Pledge, which says, in part: "I (recite your name) do hereby pledge that I will remain sexually pure until I marry".
Two Parents shared open letters to their child. STAR Guides Neema Rowe and Dashell Tolson shared about how STAR Leadership training helped them to guide other youth while at the same time receiving support in their commitment to stay abstinent until marriage.

Letter from Parent Achille Acolatse to his daughter, read at the Celebration of purity:

Dear Sarah,

First of all, Myself and mom would like you to know that we love you so much and will always love you.
Through these 10 weeks program, you have demonstrated to us how much you value the program and we are so proud of you. As the elder of our five children, you are giving a good example to your siblings by voluntarily accepting to go through this abstinence program.
I’m sure you have learned a lot and that you’ll be putting what you’ve learned here into practice in your daily life.
Please know that we are here to support you and we are available at anytime to listen to you,  to your concerns and anything you might be feeling or going through. Feel free to share anything with us at anytime. Our door is always open and we will do our best to support you and make sure that you succeed internally as well as externally.
We believe in you and we trust you.
With Love
Dad
