Enrollment Open for STAR Program for Upper Elementary & Teens The STAR (Students Teaching Abstinence & Responsibility) Program is now open for enrollment for your 4th to 6th grade youth. The STAR program uses the award winning Sex Can Wait upper elementary curriculum, peer counseling and fun activities. College STAR Guides assist in teaching the lessons each week. This program is funded by a grant from the SouthWest Washington West of the River Family Strengthening Collaborative and the US Dream Academy, so there is no charge to enroll your child. Time: Every Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., beginning October 29 The STAR Program also provides HIV/AIDS, pregnancy prevention and relationship education sessions for teens and young adults in 7th grade and older: Time: Mondays, October 26, November 2, and November 9. Stand for Marriage rally this Sunday, October 25 at Freedom Plaza People's Rally, Sunday, October 25, Freedom Plaza, Washington DC 14th St & Pennsylvania Ave. NW The Washington DC City Council has introduced legislation to recognize same sex marriages in Washington, DC. A hearing is scheduled for Monday, October 26 at 3:30 p.m. at the John Wilson Building, The first vote on the bill will be held on Tuesday, November 3. Also, on Monday, October 26 at 10:00 a.m., the Board of Elections will hear testimony regarding whether or not to allow an initiative to appear on the ballot that will allow DC voters to vote on the issue of weather or not same sex marriages will be recognized in Washington, DC. Show your support for allowing the people to vote on whether Washington DC will recognize same sex unions as marriage by attending the People's Rally on October 25 at 3:00 p.m. at Freedom Plaza, 14th St. and Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20004. Use the convenient email tool to send a message to all DC councilmembers, the Mayor and key council staff regarding keeping the definition of marriage as being the union of a man and a woman only. October 3 training seminar generates interest Fifteen people attended the ULTRA Teen Choice training seminar on October 3, 2009. The core PowerPoint presentations for HIV/AIDS, teen pregnancy prevention and relationship education were covered, as well as a peer counseling demonstration by four young adults from Howard University, American University, plus the local business community. Attendees also received an overview of the RQ Relationship Intelligence curriculum and the Sex Can Wait upper elementary curriculum.
